| Dear Friends: |
We are already off to a great year! On January 14, National Friends of Libraries announced at their author tea at the ALA convention in Philadelphia that Library Friends of Conroe was the category winner of public Library Friends group without a paid staff with our celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week! There were 5 awards of $250 each. Winners will also receive a certificate of recognition and will be featured in a future issue of News Update of FOLUSA newsletter as well as on their website. Library director, Jerilynn Williams, was at the library convention and accepted the award in our honor. Sally Reed, the executive director of FOLUSA, contacted me by phone to tell me the exciting news! Our treasurer, Charlotte Heathcott, was with me at the time of the call. What did we do to win? The idea was to celebrate Friends and bring awareness to our mission-the library! A table was set up with a large thank you card from the public to sign, bookmarks and pamphlets about our group was displayed during the week. Tony Dungy’s Book, Quiet Strength, was given to Montgomery Co. commissioners, the county judge, and mayor of Conroe thanking them for supporting the library. Certificates were given to library volunteers. Books to the library were given in honor of Boy Scout Troop 292 for their help with the book sales, Jeanette DeFee for being a founding member and volunteering with tech services, Mildred Ferguson for years volunteering with library scrapbook, Jerilynn Williams in honor of her ten years as our director, and in memory of book nook volunteer, Sandra Holloway. A picture about the event was placed in the Conroe Courier newspaper. The Christmas party was a lot of fun and
everyone enjoyed visiting with each other. Everyone brought books or money
for postage for the David George Memorial Books for Soldiers campaign. We
were so glad to have Kathleen George attend. The Book Nook and volunteers continue to make a difference for everybody that comes in. Be sure to thank these volunteers and for patrons bringing in donations. The storeroom is starting to fill up for the Spring sale! Speaking of donations, we received a generous donation from Bette Yope that will be used for Central Library. We have made Bette a Life Member in appreciation. All members will be rolled over to 2008 so
that everybody will be current as a thank you such a great year. You can
send in a donation, if you just want to help out. |
