GEORGE AND CYNTHIA WOODS MITCHELL LIBRARY

“Libraries: Deep in the Heart of Texas!!”

2009 Summer Reading Club

June 8, 2009 through July 30, 2009

The George & Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library in The Woodlands, in cooperation with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and the rest of the Montgomery County Library System, is sponsoring the 2009 Texas Reading Club:  titled, “Libraries: Deep in the Heart of Texas!!”

The Purpose of the Texas Reading Club is to promote reading, stimulate curiosity, and attract children to the library. The emphasis is on letting children read for fun and helping them retain viable reading skills during their summer vacations. The Texas Reading Club is a self—paced reading program in which children keep track of the books they read.

Texas Reading Club Rules

The 2009 Summer Reading Club is for both readers and listeners.

Children through 12 years of age may join.

  • You will receive your reading log at the time of registration. Each line in the reading log can represent one book or 50 pages (please note title next to the pages.) Once you complete a reading log with your age group’s minimum requirements you may turn in the log to qualify for a reading certificate and prize bundle.

  • Every child is eligible to receive 1 reading certificate and prize bundle.

The “Read To Your Bunny” group is for any child who is not reading independently, generally kindergarten children and younger. Children in the group may include books read to them by a parent, sibling, care giver, or librarian.

Ages 6 - 9 (grades K - 4th): A minimum of 10 books or 500 pages (50 pages counts for one book) must be read to qualify for a reading certificate and prize bundle. Also, participants will have the opportunity to participate in a special reading challenge: "Which School Can Read The Most Books." The library will track not only how many books are being read but which school or homeschooling group has the most books read by their students reading during the summer. The school or homeschooling group with the most books reported in August will receive a special visit from Miss Shelly and a book donated to their school library.

The "Pre-Teen" club is for children in 5th and 6th grade (ages 10 – 12).

Children in the club must complete a reading log with 5 books or 300 pages to qualify for a reading certificate, prize bundle and your name added to the VIR list for a special invitation-only ending party. The party will be on Monday, August 3rd from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.

The last day to report books is Friday, July 24 by 5:00 pm! If you are going to be out of town during that time please call or come by to report books before the final date. No books will be recorded after July 24th.

Children may read any book they choose. A child is not restricted to a certain reading level or subject area. Books read do not have to be library books.

All Summer Reading participants will have the opportunity to participate in a special reading challenge: If the summer readers read a total of 3,000 books collectively the library will dedicate 2 new books in honor of "The 2009 Summer Readers" with a special "In Honor" gift plate placed in the two new Texas theme stories. The books will be added to the George & Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library Children's Collection.
